Democrats Want to Ban Tobacco From Major League Baseball

WASHINGTON -- Two House Democrats are urging Major League Baseball and the players union to implement testing for human growth hormone and ban chewing tobacco by players in uniform and in public view.

Reps. Henry Waxman of California and Frank Pallone of New Jersey made those requests in a letter Wednesday to Commissioner Bud Selig and Michael Weiner, executive director of the players union.

It's the latest in a series of salvos from Capitol Hill on tobacco and HGH, although recent congressional attention on HGH has focused on the NFL.

Waxman, the top Democrat on the Energy and Commerce Committee, and Pallone, the top Democrat on the panel's health subcommittee, held a hearing last year on chewing tobacco and dip -- collectively known as smokeless tobacco. They're making a push on tobacco and HGH as MLB and the union negotiate a new collective bargaining agreement, with the current one set to expire next month.

Congress, always addressing the important stuff  ::) On the other hand, I would rather DC worry about this sort of thing than interfere in the government of individual states.

I'd like to spit some tobacco juice in Waxman's face. It would be an improvement.

Yep. This is pretty inane. You have more important shit to do fellas.

That was my first reaction as well, but like I said maybe it is for the best that they stick to issues like this :D

yes of course, seems the dems can't solve the major problems like the economy and jobs and runaway spending.. but they do have the time and the resources to advance the cause of the nanny state..

One would think with all this time to talk about the perception of sports and the use of roids. That the Dems must have that hand in the cookie jar bilking it for what they can while they can.

Then again......shouldnt these politicians be humilated publicly. Shouldnt they be questioned as to why they are wasting the tax=payers dime. Or Don't you have more important issue to deal with. Why don't you throw this on the back burner for ten years and really save us some money.

Another thing.....they say they want to ban it so they can look good. Yet in realty they don't want this shit banned. Dems luv raising taxes on Cigarettes and tobacco. What they don't want is the Citizens to be able to grow their own and bypass the government. Because then these politicians. Specifically the Demos, wouldn't be able to Steal Millions anymore.  >:(

It can't be that hard I don't think. Natives had been growing it for years. I like the idea...a little garden patch of tobaccy.
