I've read several books on the Roman military but I shoud pick a good overall history of Rome. I know I should probably read Edward Gibbon's The Decline and Fall... but I'll probably grab something a little more recent.
I managed to pick up the first five volumes of The Decline and Fall at the thrift store for under $3 a few weeks back. I'm still pretty stoked about it!

The Europeans aren't doing a darn thing anywhere. They are not relevant and consciously chose a pacifist course in what will always be a world replete with aggression. Moreover, they were able to choose such a course only because the US armed forces are the West's armed forces for all intents and purposes.
I plan on reading Where Have All the Soldiers Gone?. It examines Europe's gunshyness and how it must end if Europe is to retain some relevance in the world.
"Where Have All the Soldiers Gone?" Whatever. They played the game long enough to realize it was bullshit, and they either left by their own consciousness or because the war was losing popularity in their countries--just as it is doing here in America. But according to you, their governments should ignore their people and keep fighting an unwanted war--just as people in America need to be told to sit down and shut up about it. Is this correct or am I over-exaggerating? Slightly? The main difference here is that we have a shit load more bullheaded people who read trash like "Where Have All the Soldiers Gone?" and sit in woe because they think our country is being lost to other cultures, feeling the urge to snatch it back from whatever they can claim "stole" it from them. Damn. Shorter sentences, spunkloaf. War does not create relevance in the world, d-wang. A country does not demonstrate itself with force, unless it plans on becoming the world's enemy. You cannot single-handedly boycott (or whatever your attempt here is) other countries just because they are not fighting your wars. With that said, it is clear right now that most of the world thinks this war is unnecessary--including much of our country. Do you want to be so presumptuous to say everybody else is wrong? And further, to call them out on not fighting for something they don't want to fight for? And who cares if they are not fighting anyways? Do we not have a big enough army? Doesn't it give us more independence to win a war on our own without help? Or are you just sore that these other countries do not agree with you?

Those that think that war is unnecessary today will likely rethink their position if the oil / food / water shortages get as bad as some expect. With that said, much of the technological advances have been driven by human conflict.

lets say we tip toe out of iraq, leaving it to aq and iran, concentrating on afghanistan. putting aside the ramifications regarding world oil supply, what will be the response of those who think this war is unnecessary to aq and iran using iraq as a recruitment/training/staging area for terrorists/jihadist to send to afghanistan? as casualties continue and escalate, will we argue that in retrospect, neither afghanistan nor the taliban actually attacked us rather the crime was perpetrated by a criminal element that has been sufficiently dealt with. will we retreat to the 9-10 comfort of arrest warrants? why should we care if the taliban rules afghanistan, their resistance to turning over bin laden was after all an act of sovereignty. for instance many countries throughout the world refuse us extradition due to our backward and barbarous employment of the death penalty. i predict that the rationalizations and moral equivocations to justify inaction would be endless.

I still have yet to hear a constructive rebuttal from either of you.
Funny how whenever I offer something intelligent, you both play dumb.
It's getting very boring to converse with you guys.

See above. The conversation you'd like to begin has nothing to do with my original post. BTW, Europe would be about as much help as they are in Afghanistan.
