I think that is an excellent idea!  Contests would certainly attract some attention to these boards (geez, I think I even surfed here by accident).

If I can offer a suggestion about the ads: pop-ups, flash ads, or other invasive ads usually depreciate the real estate of websites, and they are annoying to users.  Anything else should be harmless.

Props for keeping this site free AND non-profit!

Thank you Spunkloaf! We definitely appreciate the feedback.

Spunkloaf is a very misguided young liberal but he is a Politirant diehard!

I like your avatar, and your name beatnik!

I have wanted to use that exact name before, but it was taken by somebody and I can't use other's things.  It was probably you!

I don't care for the inline ads ... it's distracting when reading people's posts.

Is there any way you could put up some standalone ads at the top or bottom of the page instead?

I'll contribute if I know what it's going toward.  More functions=more participants, and that's worth it.

Bandwidth is expensive.  Luckily this is only a forum and not an uploading service.

I am a moderator on a Mustang forum, and the owner asked me to accept money from the advertisers and I turned him down.  I am on here for entertainment, not monetary profit.  Whether you post advertisements and make money from them is your discression.  We are just on here to discuss politics and kick the shit out of each other's political ideas.   Grin  Thanks for offering the site and we don't have to worry about moderation to the point we can't be candid with each other.

I've ran sites before and they can cost a little bit of money.

Some sites ask for donations (a sports site that I frequent runs an ad-free forum, but we pitch in 10 bucks or so a year to offset the costs for the owner), and some run ads.

I don't have a problem either way.  Ads - I'm not a market target, I ignore them.  But I understand they're place, so if it helps pay for the site or even puts a few sheckles in your pocket - groovy.  It's America, baby.

Just one point I'd like to make regarding ads, some banner ads (depending on the source) can download malware onto a users computer.  I've seen it happen more than a few times and it happened to me on a gaming site that I frequent.  You don't even have to click the ad, just loading the page sets it off.  Since downloading and using Firefox, I haven't had that problem but other posters using IE might.

I started this site to give people a place to speak about politics without heavy handed moderation, not to make money. Many of the other political forums on the web do have significant earnings, and some of them have even promoted themselves here through various posts, links, personal messages, etc.

Politirant is completely free of advertising in its current form. A forum is only as good as its members, and while the idea of making money is appealing, we believe you, the posters, should be rewarded for the content you are making. After all, why should a webmaster make all the money off of your written work, when you're the one who put the time and effort into creating it?

In short, we are considering adding advertising to the site and then using the proceeds to give back in the form of money or prizes decided upon by the members. This would be another way to keep Politirant unique and 'of the people, by the people', and also give you all some thanks for being loyal to the site through all of it. Please let us know your thoughts, and thanks for ranting!

ADMIN is there an easy way for patrons to send donations for this site?

Thanks for all the feedback.

Don't worry Gunit, I won't involve you in any of that...still, it blows my mind that someone wouldn't want to proudly wear a "Politirant" T-shirt!  Wink

(It would be made in America, not China)

If all the advertisers were" American made only" that might be a raving success on a conservative leaning board.
Probably not possible though.
