The liberal environmentalist Green Party nominated former Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney as its presidential candidate Saturday.

Cynthia McKinney represented a suburban Atlanta, Georgia, district for six terms as a Democrat.

McKinney, 53, held off three rivals to win the party's nomination during its convention in Chicago, Illinois. She picked journalist and activist Rosa Clemente as her running mate.

Green Party spokeswoman Scott McLarty acknowledged McKinney was a "long shot" for the White House, but said, "Every vote that she gets helps the Green Party."

"The United States needs an alternative party," McLarty said. "The narrow two-party system we have right now has not served us very well."

Question: what were they thinking? A long shot? This harms the prospects of a third party.

Ralph Nader would have been a much stronger nominee for the Green Party. Cynthia McKinney is a cranky old woman who hasn’t accomplished anything in her life.

She is also a loony anti-Semite and radical Black activist.

On the day after the presidential election, the people who nominated McKinney will look back and think, “What the heck were we thinking?” I do not see anything in McKinney that qualifies her to be the nominee of any political party.

When Obama became the Democratic nominee, I decided that I was going to vote independent or third party. I supported Ralph Nader first, but waited to see who the Green Party chose before donating any money. Needless to say, my ten bucks will be going to Nader’s campaign.

I'm not a progressive so I don't follow happenings among the Greens but I can't imagine how they decided on her. I can see the Libertarians choosing Barr. It disgusted our resident libertarian (SDML) but I think it was at least a rational decision. I can see why they went with Barr. I just don't get this decision. I really don't.

I was way off in the republican and democrat primaries, but would like to remind everyone that I called this one:

http://politirant.com/forums/general-discussion/bob-barr/
Bob Barr

"As an aside, Mike Gravel (who lost both the dem nomination and the LP nomination) is supporting Jesse Johnson for the Green Party nomination. Jesse will almost certainly lose to Cynthia McKinney (former congresswoman from Barr's home state) due to her name recognition, just as Kubby & Ruwart lost to Barr."

Nader did not run for the GP's nomination, and declined to do so in his last run, also. I might add that I find Nader to be (more or less) a good man, but his politics suck.

Ralph Nader is a true Americanist of the left just as Pat Buchanan is a true Americanist of the right.

Are you saying they - and everyone else - should work solely within the duopoly, or just that those particular individuals are egomaniacs?

McKinney is a loon and everyone outside the Green Party knows she's a loon. What were they thinking?

A better question might be "Were they thinking?". Wink

what i am saying is that none of these (forgot kucinich) ever had a snowball's chance in hell.  paul, demonstrated the possibility of a viable third party movement, but needs to accept that his candidacy was just planting the seeds.  now they must seek to grow a grass roots movement and cultivate a competitive candidate.

unfortunately yes and an extremely ugly reality it is.  maybe a bo victory could hasten the resurgence of conservatism.
