WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Former Republican Sen. Phil Gramm said Friday that he is stepping down as co-chairman of Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign amid criticism for saying last week that "we have sort of become a nation of whiners."

Gramm on Friday said he would "join the growing number of rank-and-file McCain supporters."

Democrats blasted Gramm for the comments, made in a Washington Times interview published July 10, and McCain forcefully repudiated the remarks.

In a written statement released Friday, Gramm said his comments had become a distraction for McCain.

"It is clear to me that Democrats want to attack me rather than debate Senator McCain on important economic issues facing the country," Gramm said.

"That kind of distraction hurts not only Senator McCain's ability to present concrete programs to deal with the country's problems, it hurts the country."

Gramm, who advised presumed Republican nominee McCain on economic matters, made the controversial comments while discussing the economy.

Whining about the state of the world and offering something productive as an alternative are two different things.

Wealthy people do not have to worry about high gas prices. Wealthy people do not have to worry about high food prices. Wealthy people do not have to worry about losing their home. Wealthy people do not have to worry about losing their job. The only thing wealthy people worry about is if they can make more money while stepping on the backs of the middle class.

Wealthy people love John McCain.

Expensive gasoline is a good thing - it drives investment and research into diverse energy sources.

Unemployment is low in the US.

Inflation - there's only one commodity that's expensive right now.

Collapse of home values - only in areas where people speculated.

Repo man - ?

Stock market - past performance is not a guarantee of future returns. Wink

Food prices - maybe people will lose a little weight. Tongue

are you f ing kidding me??

investment in renewable energy does nothing to help the man who cant feed his family RIGHT NOW. you think he gives an f what al gore is saying?!

unemployment, at least in my neck of the woods is at a 30 yr high. tell people in michigan unemployment is not a problem. i dont know what you're talking about.

inflation -- everything is expensive right now. check the value of the dollar.

collapse of home value -- anyone who bought a house in 2006 is f'ed. flippers or otherwise, their house is worth less now than when they bought it.

repo man -- what happens when you can't afford to make payments

stock market -- in the crapper, likely will get worse

food prices -- well yes people will be healthier, unfortunately they still cant pay for healthcare or a decent education

you must be an oilwoman like big tex

And the poor and the middle class get jobs from wealthy people….

wealth is not inherently evil, but there is an uberwealth class that exists now that never did before. perhaps this is just the evolution of our economy, but history shows that when any small group of people obtain great, disproportionate power, destruction is not far behind.

I cannot find the numbers right now, but I posted them several months ago.  If you look at the numbers – the increase in the “uber wealthy” have not create more poor in America.  It is the poor class that has shrunk.  The middle class has stayed roughly the same.

Since we are not on a gold standard, and money is what we agree it is, the economy is not a fixed pie.  For me to gain a dollar you do not have to lose a dollar.
