December 18, 2007 -- Mayor Bloomberg's aides have been reaching out to consultants from his past campaigns about whether they are free for a possible 2008 White House bid - including one who helped make his slick mayoral TV spots, The Post has learned.

The moves took place in the past few weeks, as the primaries for the Republican and Democratic presidential nominees are about to begin - and aides have suggested that he will wait and see who the nominees are before making a decision about an independent White House run.

Bloomberg aides reached out to people involved in ad-making - including one who had been involved in creating the mayor's vaunted TV spots - asking about their availability in the coming months, the sources said.

That Bloomberg aides would look to lock up an ad team dovetails with what the mayor has privately told people about how he would spend up to $1 billion of his own fortune on an independent run, which would be played out mostly on the TV airwaves and through direct mail.

this would be great...it would mean a split in the republican vote and give the democrats a huge chance of winning

gunit, do you take it to mean bloomberg wouldn't run if giuliani were to win the nomination because they were/are both republican mayors of new york city? are they close friends or political allies? did giuliani endorse bloomberg when he was running for mayor?

this would be a huge story if it happens!!

Hasn't he run for president before? Or have the rumors just been swirling for so long it's hard to keep track...

I don't know for sure but I don't think there is much luvey-dovey feelings between guiliani and bloomberg.

He hasn't run for prez before. It's like you said Vermouth ... the rumors have been out there for so long (as well as the whole damn election cycle) it just seems like forever.

I have no idea why bloomberg is running .. obviously he has the ego to think he's better than anyone else running and feels that sinking a billion into a run for prez is a worthwhile investment.

thanks for answering my question gunit.

if he is'nt loyal to giuliani i wonder why he hasn't already declared. who in the republican party is he afraid of i wonder.

hahaha, yeah, none of these guys lack self confidence. I still think it would be great for bloomberg to run just to split the republican vote. i guess since he's kind of middle of the stream he might take some democrats with him too but overall i think it would benefit the dems.

A few months ago the Daily Show did a skit with the guy that does PC/Mac commercials (the PC guy) talking about the coyness involved in announcing a presidential run. It was hilarious but it was a perfect example of the way politicians approach running for president. The reality is that there are some legal considerations. As soon as a person announces their intent to run, various FEC regulations take effect limiting what they can do.

A great example of this is guiliani. As long as he was thinking about possibly sometime in the future throwing his hat in the ring, he could continue making millions givings speechs and be fully engaged in his consulting business. Same thing probably applies to Bloomberg. Plus as soon as he announces his intent the other candidates can sharpen their knives for attack ads against him.

It's not rocket science, it's politics.
