Yes. I like Pinochet. I like Franco and Salazar too.

I was kidding with Spunk for the most part but now I realize I am may have been onto something!

I am still kidding but not as much as I thought. Seems ol' Spunk has a soft spot for Hugo Chavez.

I think all three were staunch anti-communists who saved their nations. I've been able to find some Spanish Civil War artifacts. Nice stuff.

i think as a system communism has been proven to be a complete failure. i dont think it's the worst thing ever in the world though, compared to what happened to some of these country's citizens during the reign of these dictators. obviously communism doesn't work, but preventing your country from going that route doesnt give a man the license to imprison and kill his own citizens

the spanish civil war seemed wild. i like reading hemingway.

Communism has resulted in the deaths of some 100 million persons. Mind you, they were murdered by their own governments. I am making no reference to wars etc. The Pinochet episode pales in comparison as do the Franco and Salazar regimes. I appreciate your POV on the matter but the Cold War world was a rough place. There were many grey areas and I guess there always will be.

Hemingway volunteered on the Republican side. I think he drove an ambulance. I find his politics naive but it's fun to read memoirs etc.

. . . should be allowed to vote.

Persons such as that are the reason BIGTEX' taxes are so high.

i think that anyone who wants to vote should be forced to pass a political aptitude test

A system or political philosophy that consistently devalues the individual (e.g. fascism, communism) is bound to place little value on human life. We have seen the results of these philosophies. Nazism wasn't awful because Hitler made it awful. Similarly, the brutality of communism was seen everywhere it surfaced. It's the systwem itself that is the problem and it is the system that allows the tyrannical rule of madmen like Mao and Stalin.

Pinochet was a douche bag.  I am glad he is dead, and rotting in hell.  It will take years for Chile to regain its freedom and bury the scars he made there--again, with OUR help.

Anybody with the deaths of 3,000 people and who incarcerated 27,000 more without trials and subject to torture should be shot.  And anybody who claims he "saved Chile from communism" should be shot, as well.  He was a DICTATOR, BY EVERY DEFINITION AVAILABLE.  His regime was short lived, but it was another staple in America's quest for world domination.

And I will ask my friend Eddy about his grandpa.  You won't listen, D-wang, but I'm posting it as a real story for everybody else.  People need to know how fucked up our government is.

His regime was not short lived. Spunk. You have the internet available. Please use it. Chile has already regained its "freedom" and did so peacefully.

Again, Pinochet was a great man. The Left doesn't hate him because he was a dictator.

Ok.  Fifteen years.  Now he is dead.  SHORT LIVED.  His regime did not LAST, because he was pushed out of office.  By some dumb stroke of luck, he managed to live out his years as "Senator For Life" because of a glitch in their constitution.  Whoopie.

He was honored ONLY by those who seek to maintain that freedom does not interfere with international interests.  It was all about power, and the only reason he helped Chile's economic crisis was because he demolished equality among its citizens.  That is a dictatorship for you.

Thanks for inspiring me to learn about this horrible man.
