What's the difference between a primary and a caucus?

Why do some states have closed primaries and some open? Of those states with closed primaries, in some you can change your party affiliation as late as the day of the primary. In others, the deadline to change party affiliation is 5 months before the primary.

Why should some states have their primaries before others, effectively selecting the candidates for the entire country?

Huh
