Where in the Constitution gives Congress and the president the authority to ban gay marriage, or legislate on marriage at all?

(I believe in freedom of association. The goings-on between two individuals is of no concern to me, and should not be a concern to the federal government, unless they are preventing others from enjoying that same freedom -- or forcing others to do the same. The freedom of association also includes the freedom not to associate.)

Also, where in the Constitution gives Congress and the president the authority to wage a "war on drugs"? Article One, Section VIII of the United States Constitution. Look it up -- you might be surprised.

Glad to hear that you believe in freedom of association. It's a shame we social conservatives lost the integration battle.

Leave marriage to the states.

I think the drug war is a losing battle but we only fight it halfheartedly. It's kind of like illegal immigrat ion in that regard.

I am a social conservative. Why do you have such disdain for us?

marriage is a federal issue if and only if the gay contingent forces it to be.  "to make all laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into execution the foregoing powers, and all other powers vested by this constitution in the government of the united states , or in any department or officer thereof."

Excellent point, Sir Grump.

I think many Democrats are social conservatives as well. The Republicans bag this vote every time because the Democrats simply can't understand that people care about things outside the economic sphere.

The older I get, the more "socially conservative" I get, but I don't think that cultural trends are something that can be successfully mandated by government and I would never wish them to be.

No surprise there. I think this is generally true. As we get older we get more conservative.

But there is a difference between being a conservative in one's own life and being an advocate for Government policy to mandate certain conservative principals.  I am very conservative, but for the most part, I don’t get into other’s business and I expect the government to not butt in either.

True. There is a big difference there.

Then stop getting older!

ordered societies have law.  this law is wedded to that society's general understanding of acceptable, yes moral behavior.  if you believe that a particular law is overly restrictive, intrusive or violative of your sense of liberty, join with others of your belief and change the law.
