One of the more interesting things about Romania is that the Romanian language is a romance tongue (i.e. it is closely related to Italian, Spanish, and French). The area that comprises modern Romania is partly the old Roman provinces of Dacia and some other province I don't feel like looking up  Smiley. I think the area was largely populated by Roman military retirees in the 2nd century. It's been said that that is where Romanian ultimatel;y derived from. I am pretty sure that modern Romanians are not the descendants of Roman settlers but it makes perfect sense that the local language would be based on Latin. I'm doing this from sheer memory so I could be a little off.  Undecided I am no expert on the Balkans. Just a history buff.

This line - Româneste este cea mai limba frumoasa - did seem vaguely recognizable in a Romance language way ... the carets and cedillas throw me off. Cheesy

There are 4 additional characters in the alphabet that don't show up on the forum. Not sure why so I used a close equivelent.

It is said that romanian is closest in comparison to latin. Due to the isolation it has had from the rest of the romance world.

I'd say it's better than vague. Most Eastern Europeans languages look like gibberish to me.

Moldovia and Wallachia are the two medieval kingdoms that became modern Romania.

Just looked it up. Moesia superior and Moesia inferior

Plus Transylvania had a lot of ethnic Romanians but it was part of the Hungarian realm during the Middle Ages.

Moesia superior was the way better of the two. No comparison.

Here's the link to a Romanian song that I am very fond of if anyone is interested in listening to the native accent.

And if you're interested in seeing the lyrics in Romanian, click this link.

Very pretty song. Listening to it, it reminds me of Portuguese for reason.
