I think that Carter was the worst modern president. His actions hurt the economy; all but destroyed the military; made the US militarily impotent; and gave us a general malaise. I have no way of comparing him to presidents earlier than WWI.
But if we consider presidents using the manipulation of the public to get us into war (or further into war) from 1900 on we have to include LBJ, FRD, and Wilson- they all as were much more advanced than Shrub in lying to John Q. Public.*
Shrub is nowhere near Peanut Boy’s administration.
Back to the worst modern president: presidents are often expected to bring to the table something special to shape world events. In reality presidents merely react to global events- they have little to no control over those events. They merely react.
Many historians have said that many presidents in US history would have taken the same actions as FDR did to WWII. Why? Because the US operates (in foreign policy) in reaction to what the world gives us within the parameters of the US’ world view. In this theory, it doesn’t matter so much who the president is (assuming there is no Nero), the reaction is within a predictable range of action.
* this is a topic into itself, and I don’t have access to my ready made material since I am in the sandbox. JUST TUST ME.

Nixon is actually one of my favorite presidents. Mine too!! I wasent into politicians that much back then but always liked Nixon. In fact, my grand daughter and I were very saddened when he died. she was only 3 and didn't understand but if I was sad so was she. HAHA!! We both watched the funeral on TV>

Nixon was ugly. That's why he lost to JFK when politics hit television.
Same with John Kerry. If his ugly face wasn't on TV, he might have had a shot.
It's sad but true that elections are based almost entirely upon image. That's because most people don't care about politics, they just want a good looking leader to show off to the rest of the world. Perhaps that's why the people who give a shit about politics come up with "worst president" titles.
I also think it's unfair to label Bush as worst president. I dislike the man's policies, with a passion, but the man's job isn't quite done yet. When it is, then we can make that assumption.
Besides, there are plenty of presidents who deserve that title.

Mostly Democrats! How about Jackson and Johnson? Jackson was a kick ass general, but destroyed the economy and raped the Native Americans. Johnson inherited Jacksons mess and the Panic of 37 set in. Democrats suck.

how can you blame someone for fighting with the native americans though? with our politcally correct blinders on looking back it was bad, but wasn't the us at war with the natives either declared or undeclared for long stretches of history? it seems like there was a war and the native americans lost. war is never pretty.

They were okay until the people in Georgia found gold on their land. They tried to kick them off and then sued to the Supreme Court and won. Jackson said if the SC wanted the Indians to stay they could come doen there and protect them. Marched them 600 miles to Oklahoma. Trail of tears

And for this he has the honor of gracing the $20 bill. Makes no sense to me.

There is no mention in the wiki biography of why he is on the $20 bill. Jackson first appeared on the twenty dollar bill in 1928. It is not clear the reason the bill was switched from Grover Cleveland to Andrew Jackson. According to the U.S. Treasury, "Treasury Department records do not reveal the reason that portraits of these particular statesmen were chosen in preference to those of other persons of equal importance and prominence."Grover Cleveland doesn't make much sense either.
