My landlord is letting me get a nice piece of boar meat. He has an entire boar cut up in a freezer and asked me to feed it to the other boars (about 20) which he raises on the property once it thaws out. He told me to take some. I've never had boar meat before though he claims it is better than venison. Anyone have experience with boar? Cooking or any other tips? I guess I am looking to grill it up but I don't really know what to expect. What are the best parts to eat?

I had it before at an annual wild game feast in Sackets Harbor, NY.  I was good, but I don’t remember how they cooked it.

Does it resemble pork?

I checked the meat last night. I don't think it will be defrosted until tomorrow night. My first intuition is to just throw salt on it and grill it.  I don't need anything fancier than that.

Boar does not resemble the modern farm-raised pig.  The modern pig is bred to be over 700 lbs- and that ain’t all muscle.  It is a lot of fat.  Boar is a very lean meat that has a gamey taste to it.  http://www.brokenarrowranch.com/Articles/wild-boar-meat.html

I'm glad you posted the link. I will make sure the center is at the recommended temperature of 160-170. I wouldn't have known otherwise. Today the meat should be fully thawed. I checked 2 days ago and it was still frozen solid. I am looking forward to trying the boar meat. I'll post again tomorrow.

The meat was awesome. I thought it taste similar to steak with the gamey taste to it. Once I cut the fat away, the meat was very lean. I did leave some fat for flavor which actually added a taste of bacon in those areas which I found very appealing. I also cut off a nice rack from the ribs. I'm going to try that tonight.

I took the kids down to the pen and threw the rest of the boar to the others. They chowed down. Hell, I even gave some to the cat and watched him licking his chops afterwards.

I'm glad I tried it and would definately eat it again.

I am glad that you enjoyed it.  It is better for your health than most farm raised meat, particularly modern farming techniques of cramped conditions and grain-based feed.

Boar? I thought boar were wild. Does your landlord sell them? Good for you for trying something new and it's great that you have access to locally raised meat instead of just factory meat, but why is your landlord feeding the boar their own relatives? Not to be macabre, but these animals aren't naturally cannibals are they?

From everything Ive read, everything in the pig family will eat just about anything, from poisonous snakes to veggies to their own kind. I havent tried board yet, but I just got an ostrich egg that I am going to make into omelettes this weekend.

I don't think he sells it. He raises them for himself. The boars chowed down on the carcass pieces though. I have the ribs cooking right now. I want to slow cook it. I am trying to keep it around 200 degrees. Its been cooking for about an hour now and its still quite juicy. I have no idea when they'll be done. Smells awesome!

Very cool. I'm impressed by people who raise their own food, especially livestock. It's a lot of work! I can't even keep a tomato plant alive. Embarrassed
