The Big Apple back in the day: Broadway in the mid 1920s.

OswaldTheOsprey

Was this before the oil companies bought out the trolley systems and destroyed them because they ran on electricity, in order to pave way for big oil-consuming vehicles?

Actually, I believe, it was General Motors that bamboozled cities into doing away with trolleys and street cars so as to sell them GM buses.

Coach Amos Alonzo Stagg (1) is shown with his 1908 University of Chicago Maroons.
Big Ten Champs with a 5-0-1 record. Teams of today play twice as many games.

Aah, thanks for the correction.

........

Isn't General Motors a major player in oil, too?

Soviet T-34, Summer 1941

Must have been hit by an 88mm. The turret was ripped off...

Lately, if TV and newspaper reports are true, GM isn't doing none too swift. The bigger they are......

I posted this earlier. It's a Nazi propaganda poster.

Dutch Occupation Reichskommissar image, great caricature of Stalin. Add-on text at bottom, "This Was First Published in 1939, Was Every True Netherlander in Agreement? How About Now?"

Anyway, it turns out that there is an original for sale... Grin

Sheesh.  Shocked

US crews would sometimes complain that reissued Shermans (Sherman tanks that had been damaged but not irreparably) smelled like death. Apparently, pieces of flesh and bodily fluids remained in the crew compartments nooks and crannies even after thorough cleaning. When it got hot they would stink.

A knocked out US Sherman M-4. The Germans called them "Ronsons". The Ronson Co. made lighters and the slogan in their ads was, "Lights up the very first time".
