Saturday, Nov. 18, 1922: University of Arkansas sophomore Bill Fulbright (4) watches one
of his three field goals clear the goal post as the Razorbacks shutout SMU 9-0. Years later
the young gridiron hero was known to the world as U.S. Senator J. William Fulbright.

Every American metropolis used to have a truly great hotel. Here is
the Nicollet-Minneapolis' pride & joy. Unfortunately no longer in
existence.

Likewise, metropolises had their truly grand movie palace. Here, circa 1932,
is the Alabama, Birmingham's great pride. Still around showing classic films
and hosting other cultural events.

Cleveland Tuesday June 23, 1931: Great metropolises also built great stadiums. Here is an
aerial view of the soon to be opened Cleveland Municipal Stadium which was later known
as "The mistake by the lake" but which was a true marvel on July 3, 1931 when it hosted
the Max Schmelling-Young Stribling championship bout. Schmelling was the victor.

Manhattan Thursday April 23, 1931: Along with their beautiful structure,
great metropolises had the dark sides. A cigarette dangling from his
mouth, Prohibition racketeer Jack "Legs" Diamond jauntily ambles down
a Manhattan street. Just eight months later, in December 1931,
Diamond was "rubbed out" by his rivals.

Great thread. We should keep it going with whatever we come across that looks interesting.

Not any famous ones. Did you scan those in yourself?

I found this interesting site recently: www.squareamerica.com
It seems to consist mostly of anonymous photos from American life.

Good question. Are those part of your collection? I only have a handful of old photos.

I have found many from google searches and many from a site called corbis.com.

The Versailles Conference 1919: Prince Faisal, future king of Iraq, stands at the head of his delegation to the
Peace Conference. On the second row, second from the right, is Col. T.E. Lawrence "Lawrence of Arabia".
