With women now entitled to a year off for each child, Nicola Brewer, the chief executive of the Equalities and Human Rights Commission, said employers were thinking twice about offering them jobs or promotion.

This result is a "no-brainer."

I guess it depends on your career. Some positions can be replaced by a temporary worker for a year. In others, it would take a year just to get your replacement up to speed.

Very true: but what are employers going to do in the real world- remember this 1 year leave is paid…

I agree it's not at all realistic. Only if the woman were extremely valuable to the organization would a paid absence of that length be less costly than avoiding the situation altogether.

By the way, how long is paternal leave in the UK these days?

I am not sure- the article was about the EU standards that Britain must follow.  If I had to guess it is more like what the US mandates- 60 days.

I could not imagine a person being important enough to an organization to be given 365 days off with full pay.  I wish that I were.
