If Bloomberg said it would be a good idea you'd all be for it as well. If it will make no difference then so what? The election is this november, too late for this tax break on gas this summer. Don't you know that politicians will say anything to get elected? And that encludes B. Obama, H. Clinton and J. McCain.
Bloomberg? I'm surprised you even know who he is. You're in Arkansas, right?

Bet if obama came up with the same idea you'd all be FOR it. I wouldn't ... a dumb idea is a dumb idea ... no matter who spouts it.

The Department of Energy says "ANWR coastal plain oil production in 2025 is projected to constitute between 0.5 to 1.3 percent of total world oil consumption." This isn't going to have a significant effect on global prices. There may be other sources of oil – domestic, or at least in this hemisphere – worth pursuing.
Equally important, our refinining capability hasn't kept up. Our newest refinery was built in 1976.
The refineries that turn crude oil into gasoline are already working at close to full capacity. According to the Department of Energy, U.S. refineries, operating at their peak, can produce only 8.06 million barrels per day of the stuff most cars run on. But the DOE also says that the U.S. consumes 9.25 million barrels of gasoline per day. In other words, American motorists are already using about 1 million more barrels of gasoline per day than American refineries can produce.
So not only are we importing crude oil, but almost 10% of the gasoline we use is imported because our refineries cannot meet demand.
The DOE predicts gasoline demand will be 12.9 million barrels a day in 2025.

I have an idea- let’s impose a windfall profit tax against oil companies to force them to create more refineries?

I reckon during the 90's you could blame Clinton for not pushing to have more refineries built .... but after 7 years of having two oil men in charge of the country .... what's their excuse for not pushing to have refineries built

Neither Clinton, Shrub, nor Darth have any excuse whatsoever for the lack of new refineries in the US. They of course, had help from the Congress and the radical environmental movement.

CONFIDENTIAL/URGENT POLITICAL PROPOSAL
Dear Sir/Madam
First we must solicit your confidence in this issue. This is by virtue as being utterly confidential and "top secret".
We are SENATOR HILLARY CLINTON, the wife of the former United States head of state, PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON, and also SENATOR JOHN MCCAIN, friend and associate of current head of state PRESIDENT GEORGE W BUSH. We got your contact through business inquiries as we were searching for contacts of a citizen who can help save our and our family's political careers since our country has been frustrating us.
We are top officials of the United States Senate Government who are interested in importation of oil into our country with funds that are presently trapped in the FEDERAL TRANSPORTATION TRUST FUND dedicated to improving transportation. We wish to send this money to overseas accounts in the MIDDLE EAST but cannot due to restrictions in Congress Transportation Equity Act requiring that this money must be spent to build roads, bridges and high speed trains.
If you accept we will deliver to your a sum of 30 DOLLARS in the summer 2008 in form of a "GAS TAX HOLIDAY". You will then deliver this money to accounts of our friends in Middle East by taking it to your nearby gasoline station where they have information to forward the money. Please supply your bank account, social security number, address and your vote in DEMOCRATIC PRIMARIES AND NOVEMBER GENERAL ELECTION.
But bear in mind that this transaction requires absolute confidentiality. Do not visit WWW.GASTAXSCAM.COM where there is information about dangers of our proposal and a petition to stop us from this diversion of funds.
PLEASE NOTIFY US URGENTLY OF YOUR ACCEPTANCE OF THIS PROPOSAL
Awaiting your rapid response
Yours truly
SENATORS HILLARY CLINTON AND JOHN MCCAIN

I was wondering--does anybody take the time to read proposed bills, or do they just follow a general consensus whether to support it or not?

Even Cheney opposes McCain's gas tax holiday plan. The vice president also criticized a proposal to suspend the federal gasoline tax, saying that it would provide "minimal" relief to American consumers while avoiding the "main issue" of oil supply and demand, and arguing that the United States needs to produce more oil. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/06/02/AR2008060201856.html

I'm sure a lot of senators and representatives work that way. Some are terribly lazy. Others are just too stupid to understand... Like Tom Coburn.

Dick the VIP is certainly correct that a gas-tax holiday is a band aide (and a very sort-term one at that). But I am all for taking money from an irresponsible Congress. The federal government makes more off gas sales than Big Oil, and Congress had the gall to drag the Big Oil CEOs to lecture them on greed.
