Grump, I don't think Ozzy is belittling soldiers.  He's belittling the institution which employs them.

Soldiers are just people.  Why would anybody want to attack them?

Well put Spunk. My father is World War II Navy vet. I honor him and all who served, now serve or will serve. It is the internationalist establishment I hold in the utmost contempt. Thanks again truly understanding what I meant.

Spunk, I'm not singling you out. That was just a general comment. I understand your sentiment. I don't believe there are any good wars and that includes WW2. I do believe, however, that wars are at times necessary in order to prevent the world getting any worse. The suffering and sacrifices that war engenders are not always as pointless as they may seem.

My main issue here is the simplification of human events to fit preconceived notions. For example, the idea that monied interests want war and conspire to bring it about is terribly misleading.

You are probably right.
With something so complicated presented to a person who needs reason and meaning, such as myself, it is easy to construe such ideas.

Still...

Well that may certainly be part of it. When it comes to the grand scheme of things I don't seek reason or meaning because it isn't there or simply cannot detected by reason alone.

It isn't a matter of forgetting the past. To eliminate war Man must eliminate himself. I have come to the belief that war is in our genes. Indeed, we have realized that total war is far too destructive. We have not engaged in it since 1945. We also understand that nuclear weapons are simply a deterrent and have no value beyond deterrence. They have no practical use being so destructive. That said, since the end of total war and the dawn of the atomic age many more people have been killed than were killed in both world wars combined.

Last, our best hope is to control and limit war rather than entertaining false hopes of abolishing it.

It is often a piece of the puzzle and one we too often shy away from.

It is no surprise to me that Wilson is not the grand hero he is presented as. I am much more familiar with the outbreak of war in 1914 than I am with American involvement. Sounds strange, I know. That is actually what I had in mind when I made my comments. The political and economic establishment feared war and what it could (and did) bring: revolution.

I just skimmed this but will take it all in as I always try to. Lookout's links are the only ones I tend not to bother with.

Also, it's nothing personal. I just see things differently.

good luck! what part are you auditioning for?

-----------------------------------------------

as an aside, does anyone really think "Helter Skelter" inspired Manson to commit those murders? I don't. Just like Marilyn Manson didn't inspire the Columbine kids, and so on. I guess you can make the argument that movies, tv, music, video games are more graphic than they used to be, but kids always played with toy guns, cowboys and indians, GI joe, and so on. i'd blame the availability of the weapons.

Keyboard and rhythm guitar---

Here's how it went.  I showed up and played one song (we had messed around with it before, kinda pulled it out our asses) and one of the guys told me they were playing a show in St. Cloud on the 29th, and that I should play with them. !!
I "hmmd" and "hahd" about it--explaining that I am VERY rusty at playing anything right now, and we drank some beer until everybody went home except me, the front man and his girlfriend.  Before we left, he said "thanks for agreeing to do the show with us.  You will not be getting paid."

"...Cool."

pretend for a moment that you are a parent with a 13 year old teen.  would you allow your child unrestricted/monitored internet access??  would you allow them to watch graphically violent and sexual productions??  if your answer is yes than that is the end of the discussion.  if your answer is no, then why not?

did you ever see a playboy when you were 13? or younger? most boys are going to see those things regardless of whether a parent wants them to or not. being a good parent is more than just monitoring tv and/or internet. it's about teaching right from wrong. watching a skin flick is a world apart from taking an uzi to class.
