Jackson Browne sues John McCain over song use

Jackson Browne is suing John McCain for using the song "Running on Empty" in a campaign ad -- and the veteran rocker is also calling the candidate a great pretender when it comes to standing up for constitutional rights.

Browne, one of rock music's most famous activists for liberal causes, is "incensed" that the presumptive Republican candidate for president has been using Browne's signature 1977 song "Running on Empty" in campaign commercials, according to the singer-songwriter's attorney. Browne filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against both McCain and the Republican National Committee on Thursday in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles seeking a permanent injunction prohibiting the use of the forlorn arena anthem or any other Browne compositions, as well as damages.

They may be suing the wrong people. McCain spokesman Brian Rogers tells our colleague Seema Mehta in Colorado that the ad in question is not a McCain campaign ad but one put together by the Ohio Republican Party.

But Browne's attorney, Lawrence Y. Iser, says they have the right defendants. "We have sued the Ohio Republican Party as well, and we have been informed and believe that McCain and his campaign were well aware of the ad. We are also informed and believe that the ad was broadcast on television in Ohio and Pennsylvania.... The fact that it appears on the Internet means it also reaches an audience well beyond those states."

They need to get a red-blooded muscian, like Johnny Cash ... oh wait a minute ... he supported Carter .. never mind.

Browne sues a war hero that almost lost his life and was a POW for 5 1/2 years to protect his freedoms in the USA?
Browne needs to move to Russia, there he can learn to appreciate the freedoms in America.  Grin

Okay, wowster.  Wow-e-wow.  McCain stole his song, and you're attacking Browne--as if McCain had some God-given right to steal anybody's music for his advertisements, just because he was a prisoner of war.

As if Jackson Browne owes all of his music to McCain just because McCain (like SO, SO many others) fought in a war.  Are you serious; or just pissed because gunit made a good point here?

You need to get it out of your head that soldiers should rule everything and are entitled to do whatever they want.  They get paid, they get their medals, they get to visit schools when they become old bastards--that's enough.  Acutally (I did a D-wang!), it's not nearly enough; we do need to take care of our veterans more, but that is beside the point I am making.  John McCain is entitled to nothing.  He needs to ask for permission to use music JUST LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE.

Right about the music and right about better treatment for veterans.

How did McCain "steal" his song?
McCain may have used his song without permission in relation to his campaign.
Go to a bar or night club and listen to the songs they use without permission.

This is nothing more than exploiting brave war heros for profit$$$$$ to buy more cocaine and beat up more innocent, defenseless women.  Sad

And what did you think of Jackson Browne BEFORE McCain stole his song?

Look it up in the law books, Wowster.  Songs are copyrighted, and those songs you speak of at bars have PERMISSION!  PERMISSION!  PERMISSION!  It's called royalties.  Do yourself a favor and look it up.  McCain did not ask, and he did not pay royalties.

McCain did not ask for permission.  He is a crook.  Now it is official.  Wink

And further, just because you don't "like" Jackson Browne doesn't mean McCain has the right to steal his music.  Tell me why that is relevant?

He stole Jackson browne's music.  You cannot use somebody else's art to advertise without first asking them, and additionally paying royalties to the artist.  That's how artists make money.  You think Jackson Browne should have just offered his work up for McCain to use, openly?  I would be just as offended, as a musician.  Even if it was Obama.  Fuck, if you're gonna use my work, you better ask me first--and then give me some money for it.

Vice versa.  McCain should pay Browne for the free advertisement.  He's the one who stole the music.  Typical of an old crook.  Roll Eyes
