Senator John McCain, whose recent suggestion that an increase in the Social Security payroll tax would not be off the table infuriated some fiscal conservatives, sought to reassure people here Wednesday that he opposes tax increases.
“I want to look you in the eye: I will not raise your taxes nor support a tax increase,’’ he said here Wednesday at a town-hall-style meeting at the Wagner Company, a Caterpillar dealer. “I will not do it.’’
Mr. McCain has been attracting criticism from the right ever since he said that “nothing’s off the table” when he was asked Sunday on ABC’s “This Week With George Stephanopoulos” whether raising payroll taxes would be an option for Social Security.
Pat Toomey, the president of the Club for Growth, an influential anti-tax group, called the statement “shocking” and issued an open letter to Mr. McCain asking him to clarify his stance and to “reaffirm your commitment to eschew all tax increases.” And an editorial in The Wall Street Journal called Mr. McCain’s statement a “blunder,’’ and added that: “Such mistakes also help explain the continued lack of enthusiasm for Mr. McCain among many conservatives.’’ http://thecaucus.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/07/30/mccain-no-new-taxes-redux/index.html

How will raising payroll taxes help Social Security, anyway? Social Security is a mess. We need to let people decide how to invest their retirement money, not the federal government.
I expect McCain to ask Congress to make the Bush tax cuts permanent if he’s elected. I won’t support such a measure if spending cuts aren’t tied to the particular piece of legislation. Tax cuts don’t do much without spending cuts. If you cut taxes and increase spending, the deficit goes up. How is that fiscally responsible? That’s the same thing Ronald Reagan did. He approved the largest tax cut in history. Revenues went down record numbers. He didn’t cut spending. Bad stuff happened.

The general public is not capable investing in its own retirement. Way too many crooked investiment companies. Most cannot even do their own income tax returns. We'd wind up in a real mess if we relied on people like many obama followers to invest. They want everything for free. Welfare check grabbers. Free everything for them. Let the rich support their rearends.

little mac is not a conservative and at his core he believes all too often that bigger, better govt is the answer. this is why many who firmly believe that bo is a disaster still have trouble voting for little mac.

No offense, but that is a ridiculously pessimistic view of your fellow countrymen, and I think you're very wrong. Even a simpleton can pick a money market from a list. Use the big names- Fidelity, Vanguard, etc. You don't have to use a fly-by-night operation and you don't have to personally "manage" the fund. If you can set your TiVo you can handle investing in your own retirement. MeatMop.

I agree that they could but have little faith they would. Look what happened with all the housing foreclosures. Makes a person wonder. If people can be scammed this easily then what about crooked investment companies.

I'm 32 and I started saving 2 years ago. It was a great move to get in the habit of having that deduction every week. I don't even feel it financially (15%) but now that I'm saving for a homestead I will drop it to 10%.

Thats good for you mr d but many people go from job to job, living from paycheck to paycheck. I see them everywhere. Many are responsible and save etc. but the sad reality is most do not. There are millions who don't even know if they will have a job from one day to the next. We also have millions of illegal immigrants who we will be supporting. I think social security could work if done properly. It is not meant to be a retirement plan on its own, but many elderly would be homeless if not for it. I don'tmind paying into it.

You are confusing "Privatizing" social security with "Abolishing" it. If I understand the concept correctly, social security deductions will still be automatically withdrawn from every paycheck. The difference is that you have a discreet amount of money that grows with you throughout your career and into retirement. As it is right now, I pay into social security but there's not a guaranteed pile of money with my name on it; it's just a big fucking trans-generational pyramid scheme. Have a good weekend I'm out. I have absolutely no problem voting for Senator John McCain, because it is a vote against an undisputable communist by the name of Barack Hussein Obama. That said, if this election was about the best interests of America, we'd be choosing between Fred Thompson and Bill Richardson.

regarding social security, the issue is not what you are willing to pay, but what you are willing to mandate others pay. I agree that they could but have little faith they would. Look what happened with all the housing foreclosures. Makes a person wonder. If people can be scammed this easily then what about crooked investment companies.
this is dangerously asinine. please be offended.
