Why should there be only one?
because liltaint has a point in generally stating that this is the united states of america and english is the language of the land. through this language we are bound cross culturally. putting alaskan villages aside for the moment, if you cannot speak the language what are you doing voting? why and how have we developed a situation where citizens of this nation cannot, have not or will not learn the language of the land. why would you speak to further perpetuate this? This has been my position all along and is the strongest argument for an official language. Our common langauge is all that holds this place together or it may as well be a boarding house for the real nations of the world. Indeed, Grumpy makes an excellent point. Why would anyone want to make a bad situation worse? Could it be that they hate the USA and wold very much like it if we lost our identity? EDIT: Not suggesting Gunit hates the USA

mr d, do you aspire to a concept of "american exceptionalism?" i do i think, believe that this nation was founded by exceptional people and that our founding document(s) are exceptional manifestos re the inalienable liberty of man. i believe that everything about this country is unique and again exceptional, and we as a people a nation have lost our way and in our present state of wandering are flirting with giving it all away. on my fourth vodka concoction

Absolutely. I have read that the belief in "American exceptionalism" ended with Vietnam but I don't think this is true. This is wishful thinking on the part of Leftist intellectuals and I think that this country has vast reserves of patriotic sentiment. Our primary problem, IMO, is that we are afraid to define ourselves thus this language debate.

What made the US exceptional was its limited government. This was the great experiment.

what has made this nation exceptional the strength and courage required in it's discovery, conquest and settlement the thoughts, experiences and intellect of the men who authored our founding documents acknowledgment that inalienable rights are bestowed upon us by our creator not man and therefore may not be subject to the whims of man our early recognition and commitment that this union shall not perish the entrepreneurial spirit of immigration the long held ethic and belief of the people in self-reliance and limited govt the rule of law the protection of two oceans and largely undefended border an inherent agricultural capability unrivaled in the world our ability and willingness to defend liberty and freedom here and when necessary abroad
not a complete list just a few thoughts

Not to mention cheap labor from China (gold mines, railroads, and getting your whites really clean in all those cowboy movies...plus tattoos), cheap labor from Ireland (factory labor, urban labor..and cheap whiskey), free labor from Africa (all industries in the south for 250 years) followed by cheap labor from their descendants, and more.
You can also include cheap labor from Mexico and, of you're a politician, pretend to be concerned about it while reaping the benefits: lower prices for your produce, your Christmas trees, your landscaping & lawn-care, your home improvements.....

Hahahaha I was starting to feel all patriotic and SDML had to go burst that bubble. Cheap labor doesn't make us exceptional. It's available worldwide. I would add to Grumpy's list our free press.
