US Mideast chief Fallon in Baghdad: military

Wed Mar 12, 9:37 AM ET

BAGHDAD (AFP) - The commander of US forces in the Middle East was making a surprise visit to Baghdad on Wednesday, the US military said, shortly after he announced his resignation amid reports of disagreements with President George W. Bush.

Admiral William Fallon "is currently in Baghdad," a US military spokesman, Lieutenant Michael Street, told AFP.

Fallon said Tuesday he is stepping down because reports that he differed with Bush over Iran had become "a distraction."

US Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced he had accepted Fallon's resignation "with reluctance and regret," saying there was a "misperception" that the admiral was at odds with the administration over Iran.

Gates said there were no significant differences between Fallon's views on Iran, which has defied global calls to rein in its suspect nuclear programme, and those of the administration.

The sudden departure of Fallon drew an avalanche of criticism from top Democrats who suggested that he had been forced out because of his candour.

if he was forced out it was because he put forth a message that conflicted with his commander.

Can you imagine, what the media would do to Republicans that played this type of politics with the war on terrorism?  Shocked

Here is the straw that broke the camel’s back.  http://www.esquire.com/features/fox-fallon

I suspect that even the most radical on both sides of the aisle believes that the civilian leadership should create policy and military commanders should implement that policy, rather than create their own policy.  Fallon was perceived as creating his own policy.

it seems to me that we have and are witnessing attempts to usurp the authority and policy of this administration within the state dept, cia, doj and dod.
