The FBI and Department of Homeland Security today issued an analytical "note" to U.S. law-enforcement officials cautioning that al-Qaida terrorists have in the past expressed interest in attacking public buildings using a dozen suicide bombers each carrying 20 kilograms of explosives.

Authors with the U.S. Office of Intelligence and Analysis added that they have "no credible or specific information that terrorists are planning operations against public buildings in the United States." The FBI and DHS analysts said they were releasing the note because "it is important for local authorities and building owners and operators to be aware of potential attack tactics."

According to the note obtained by NBC News, a "recently discovered audio recording of al-Qa‘ida training sessions conducted several years ago provides instruction to potential suicide terrorists on seizing a publicly accessible building and damaging or destroying it with explosive charges."

http://deepbackground.msnbc.msn.com/archive/2008/10/06/1501940.aspx

let's see ... economy tanking, mcsame tanking in the polls and an audio tape from several years is a justification for warning us today of a possible AQ attack. sheesh ... never saw that one coming.

Be on the lookout for Muslims with nail clippers too.  They can be deadly.

Be on the lookout for Black men between the ages of 15-35. That might actually be a more useful public service announcement, I agree. Then again, 9/11 really did happen. So, if and when something like that happens again the public will want answers, correct? It couldn't be that the feds are covering their butts? There is a fine line between cynicism and stupidity, gentlemen. You both crossed it.

Somehow you manage to remain on both sides at once.

And of COURSE I know the feds want to cover their butts.  Whose else would they care about?

About the Black men ...I'm sure you get your little can of pepper spray out of your purse every time you walk by one.  Grin

You would think that republicans would come up with something new. It worked in 2004, but I don't think the public really believes anything DHS says anymore.

You sir are a jackass.  If you think that there have been no threats thwarted by the government in the last year then you are a fool.  I wish we would release all of the instances of thwarted attacks.  You would piss you pants.

the problem with these "warnings" is that when we really need to be alert, we'll all be so desensitized to it that we wont recognize the true threat

the pendulum has swung so far in the other direction with foil wrapped burritos and snapple bottles causing evacuations its getting ridiculous

i did enjoy the story today of a congressman's office being evacuated b/c of a suspicious package that was leaking 'oil'

turns out someone sent him a big package of BACON to protest the PORK in the bailout  Cheesy Cheesy Cheesy

I agree that the warnings have been overkill.  But DHS is worried that if they don't provide a warning after credible threat it will be destroyed in the press if an attack occurs.  Make no mistake: America has been spared serious damage because of DHS.  That is no excuse for over-regulation; I too fear the loss of our rights.  The balance is critical and we are working on it.

Good point.  No REAL ID, revise the PATRIOT ACT, and more border protection.

yes it is a fine line...i am glad DHS is keeping us safe but still believe the job could be done by streamlining our government agencies, not adding to them in a redundant manner. whoever is doing the job has done a great one ths far.

DHS is doing its best to streamline the process.  It is hard to bring the 22 agencies that are now apart of DHS together as one.

That's what happens when you appoint incompetent ideologues to positions that require competent expertise. A strong leader would get the job done rather than complain that it's hhhhaaaaaaarrrrrrrrddddddd work.

My experience leads me to conclude that the problem is from the components brought under the DHS umbrella.  I see it every day.
