How's this for spreading freedom and democracy  Huh
Heck of a job georgie!

http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/sentenced-to-death-afghan-who-dared-to-read-about-womens-rights-775972.html

A young man, a student of journalism, is sentenced to death by an Islamic court for downloading a report from the internet. The sentence is then upheld by the country's rulers. This is Afghanistan – not in Taliban times but six years after "liberation" and under the democratic rule of the West's ally Hamid Karzai.

The fate of Sayed Pervez Kambaksh has led to domestic and international protests, and deepening concern about erosion of civil liberties in Afghanistan. He was accused of blasphemy after he downloaded a report from a Farsi website which stated that Muslim fundamentalists who claimed the Koran justified the oppression of women had misrepresented the views of the prophet Mohamed.

Mr Kambaksh, 23, distributed the tract to fellow students and teachers at Balkh University with the aim, he said, of provoking a debate on the matter. But a complaint was made against him and he was arrested, tried by religious judges without – say his friends and family – being allowed legal representation and sentenced to death.

gunit i thought you supported the rights of these governments to do as they sit fit with regard to crime? we had a thread about the beheddings in saudi arabia and you compared it to the american death penalty?

well in defense of afghanistan, the above is a far worse crime than letting your classroom children name their teddy bear mohammed (which i believe is a pretty common name in the middle east) -- im sure you heard about that case

if letting your kids name a teddy bear mohammed is a crime punishable by death then this is a slam dunk case for the prosecution -- thank god they did let the heathen teacher return to england

(/end sarcasm)

seriously this stuff is just crazy batshit...and the us govt continues to support these barbaric regimes

while saddam was murdering, yes hundreds of thousands no one said anything.  in fact cnn would not report his atrocities so as to keep a news outlet in iraq.  why would you want a news outlet in iraq if you have no intention of reporting the news?  i guess the crazy bat shit of barbaric regimes is more palatable when they are secular progressive?

Conley, we were discussing the execution of someone who murdered someone else. The comment I made was:

"While we may find the practice of executions by beheading somewhat horrible, that is the standard form of execution in the muslim world. Is that much different than our history of executions? In the not too distant past we've executed people by firing squad, hanging, and frying.

There are criminals in this country that deserve horrible executions. That dude down in florida who kidnapped and raped a little girl and then buried her alive in a garbage bag with her teddy bear. The DC snipers who randomly shot people. I'm sure ya'll can add other examples. "

Now if you were to ask me how the dude down in florida should be executed I'd say beheading would be TOO NICE. I'd cut off his genitals, stick them in his mouth and THEN chop his head off.

But this journalism student has been sentenced to death for downloading and passing around a report on women's rights. My intent on posting it was to show how much democracy and freedom georgie is bringing to the muslim world.

right, ok...well the head chopping off might be better than the various means of execution used in this country

but i guess my concern also was that some of these saudis who were executed are barely guilty of crimes worthy of death

in saudi arabia there is no such thing as a slap on the wrist, it's more a slice through your wrist

i dont support the death penalty myself, (ah crap here i go again pissing people off), because its obvious a lot of mistakes have been made (as we are now finding out with dna technology).

its easier to let a guy out of jail then it is to bring him back from the dead ;-)

I agree with you on the death penalty Conley -- I think it's crueler to keep someone in prison for the rest of their life .. and in the event of an oops ... it's easier to let him/her out of prison than to dig them up.

thats a really good point too...without knowing what comes afterward for any of us, especially the murderers, it does seem like being locked up for your entire life is a pretty bad punishment

but then sometimes you hear about these guys getting to play basketball, fingerpaint, etc and that does piss me off...for the real monsters it shouldnt be a resort
