I believe that we need a national healthcare plan.  Smiley A plan that covers everyone. If those who can afford it want a private plan then let em have at it. Maybe there should be a vote of the people?

maybe there should be a "vote of the people" to seize your house and turn it into a community recreation center because after all recreation is a right. Roll Eyes

How can this happen in Canada’s superior health care system?

http://www.theglobeandmail.com/servlet/story/RTGAM.20080505.wpregnant05/BNStory/specialScienceandHealth/home

More than 100 Canadian women with high-risk pregnancies have been sent to United States hospitals over the past year – in what a doctors' group attributes to the lack of a national birthing plan.

“Neonatologists are very stretched right now,” Dr. Lalonde said in a telephone interview from Ottawa. “We're so stretched, it's kind of dangerous.”

I guess that Canada didn’t budget for these women….

Peter, don't believe everything you read. Things must be taken in context. Canada's healthcare is great. I have experienced boyh systems and canada is better.  Smiley At least one can get healthcare there. We are the only industrial civilized country in the world without some kind of national healthcare. Those with healthcare don't realize that they are just a few steps away with none in this country. Think about it. I have excellent healthcare but I am very concerned for those who do not. So don;t knock countries who at least give a shit for the less fortunate. Unlike many on this board.   Angry Angry

This is due partly to the much larger Black population in the US.

in canada it makes no difference what race you are. you get healthcare. minorities would not have higher rates if there was a national healthcare system. I think its disgraceful that a mighty, wealthy country such as the USA can, but won't support a national healthcare system.  Angry This is my compassionate side speaking. This country would save money with a heallthcare system.

Pitty, the causes of higher fatality rates are partly if not entirely genetic.

So you say that blacks are genically predisposed to die younger than whites? Do you have any data on that theory?  Preventive healthcare makes no difference?

No, I said that Black infants have a greater chance of dying but since you mention it Blacks do in fact have a greater genetic predisposition to heart disease than other races. They also run faster and jump higher if you haven't noticed.  Grin

I did not say that preventive healthcare makes no difference, however, one glance at the chart I provided should quickly lead you to conclude that perhaps you are putting way too much emphasis on healthcare and too little on genes?

Infant mortality rates are higher in the US because of our definition of a live birth.  Other countries simply do not count babies as live births if they don’t have much chance to live.  The US has superior technology so we can give many more babies a chance to survive where other countries cannot.

If there are going to be comparisons between countries, it would be interesting to see the exact same standards used in the comparison.

I don't believe everything I read.  Perhaps you have access to some statistics that disprove those in the article that I linked to.  Did those 100 mothers not exist?  I do not discount that the article could be propaganda.  But simply asserting that it didn’t happen isn’t enough.

I too am very concerned for people who do not have adequate health care.  However, I fear that a government run system in the US will not provide that healthcare.
