"Recent weeks have seen heightened tensions between Italian authorities and the country's Roma minority amid a crackdown by Silvo Berlusconi's government targeting illegal immigrants and talk by government officials of a "Roma emergency" that has seen the 150,000-strong migrant group blamed for rising street crime." can someone explain? thanks http://www.cnn.com/2008/WORLD/europe/07/21/italy.drowning/index.html?iref=mpstoryview

Gypsies. Italy is having a problem with immigration. The Economist had an article on the Roma just recently. They were overly sympathetic but they support open borders.

Without looking it up I'd say they originated somewhere in central Asia. I'm not sure. They are not Slavs if memory serves but eastern Europe has had a large Roma population for a long time. Incidentally, the Nazis tried to exterminate them.

No, they are not known for being well educated or employed. This is an old stereotype bu,t like all stereotypes, based largely on fact.

"Van Zandt maintains a certain look, always wearing gypsy clothes and a bandana on stage, while donning a noticeable pompadour toupee on The Sopranos. Both are to cover permanent loss of hair from a car accident where he hit a windshield with his head.[5]" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steven_van_Zandt
