"Conservatives" only sort of get it. No surprise the economic impact takes center stage. It's informative though.

The gap between whites and Hispanics mattered very little to GDP growth when the Hispanic population represented a small share of the working-age population. In 1940, whites constituted 88 percent of the U.S. population, while Hispanics were only 1 percent. But because of higher birth rates and, to a lesser extent, continued immigration, the Hispanic population is growing rapidly. The Census Bureau estimates that in 2050, whites will be a minority of 46 percent of the population, while Hispanics will have grown to 30 percent.

There is debate among economists regarding whether immigration of less-skilled Hispanics has depressed the wages of less-skilled native-born American workers. But the more important economic impact of this demographic shift is its effect on the overall skill profile of the U.S. work force. Though poorer than native-born Americans, Hispanic immigrants are far richer than they would have been in Latin America. Thus the impact of their immigration on global income has been positive. But if the achievement gap did not exist, this increase in Hispanics’ living standards would be even larger, and American per capita GDP growth would be higher.

It is very difficult to predict the trajectory of future economic growth. We can, however, offer crude estimates by drawing on what we know about the relationship between the skill level of workers and overall economic growth. Per capita GDP growth has already been dampened by the combination of an increasing Hispanic population share and a persistent ethnic gap in average income. In the coming four decades, the effect of demographic change is expected to be even more dramatic.

Perhaps as immigration slows and the percentage of native-born Hispanics grows their per capita GDP will grow as well.

Hopefully. It's amazing just how potentially lethal some of the gambles are elites take can be for this country.

As long as their own fortunes go up with relatively low risk, do they even care? It seems like this sort of thing would be easy for them to justify in their own heads.

Wow immigrants who have to work in the fields to make ends meet make less than the guys on Wall Street. What a surprise. If this were the land of opportunity people claim then you wouldn't see a gap like this. Give hispanic kids the same chances as white kids and you'll see theres no difference.

Not sure. The multi-racial population is tiny.

What I mean......Latins are mingling with other races moreso than they ever have in their history. As native born hispanics. They still would be counted as hispanic if mixed.

Yep, I do see all kinds of mixing out here in CA. It's really hard to tell what's going on with all the different flavors...wait, are we still talking about pizza?  ;D

Seriously though, it does seem like there is a lot of mixing of the people out here. Throw in the confusion about Hispanic being a 'race' and it becomes even tougher to tell. I would guess in this study we're talking about people who self-identify as Hispanic.

Its the same way around Chicago and its suburbs. Even into NW Ind. I would say that the most are mixed with white around these areas. Yet with the stats they would be counted as hispanic with their capita to GDP. So wouldnt that affect the numbers one way or another?
