Let’s Have a Real Foreign-Policy Debate

Saturday’s Republican foreign-policy debate yielded only one revelation, neither comforting nor productive: When it comes to international affairs, most of the contenders offer plenty of political theater and little substance.

First there are the “know nothing” candidates, who struggle to produce a one-minute debate answer. They fear straying from conventional Republican foreign-policy talking points because they know nothing about foreign policy and merely aspire to keep afloat in the debate.

Rick Perry and Herman Cain duked it out to see who is captain of the Know Nothing team. Who was more unimpressive? It was a close call.

If you don't have enough material in your head to provide one minute's worth of material on foreign policy then you have no business running for the office. I'm not saying soundbites are good practice but come on!

I'm sure Grump will weigh in. These guys do sound like a bunch of Democrats. They obviously haven't formulated a foreign policy stance with one or two exceptions. Granted, the economy will be the primary factor but there is a lot going on in the world. We live in perilous times.

from the limited time that i watched, both gingrich and romney did fine....santorum and gingrich had a rather substantive disagreement regarding pakistan.....all with the exception of paul were unequivocal in opposing a nuclear armed iran....and only paul was so confused to assert that waterboarding is torture without being able to define torture....further the exchange between the moderator and gingrich ie obama's targeting a us citizen was excellent and gingrich was correct.....

The author is right to say that Paul is principled but while principled views lack a real world or practical outlook.
